Engage the board recognizes that “one size does not fit all” and does not impose a model of governance on the organization. Instead, we develop the governance function based on on the unique needs of the organization.  We then provide organizations with best practices where there are gaps.

How our Process Works

We begin with an assessment of board member knowledge and experience, and organizational needs.  The assessment is built using a unique dialogic experience, the Café. This dialogue is then used to develop an appropriate governance structure and system that supports inclusive engagement. Assessment sessions include:

  • Understanding board member governance knowledge, perspectives, and experience
  • Engage all members with an understanding of intentions, purpose, and willingness.
  • Develop clarity of governance role, expectations, and accountability.
  • Examine the current supporting conditions, factors, and elements.
  • Determine areas of development.
  • Examine the current supportive governance processes, procedures, and policies.
  • Create a governance development plan and implementation schedule.

Creating a dialogic experience with organization members using World Café principles includes 8 basic steps:

  1. Determine and agree on questions and specific issues facing the organization.
  2. Creating intimate settings (on-site or outside setting) for exploring questions
  3. Converse on each question
  4. Harvest/share conversations and ideas
  5. Agree on development issues, strategies, and actions
  6. Develop and create a plan with intended actions.
  7. Review and approve the plan.
  8. Establish an implementation schedule.

To begin engaging your board, we only have 3 organizational requirements:

  • Setting, a within organization space or offsite)
  • Allot the time required.  This would be two 3 hours meetings over 2 evenings, or as an alternative a day-long retreat.
  • Commitment from participants to embrace the process.
